Project Overview

Under this contract Dawnus improved and reconfigured Darlaston’s road infrastructure in four key locations as part of the overall regeneration strategy. The works were to ensure improved safety at the junctions for pedestrians, cyclists and motorised road users, to reduce queuing and to improve access to key employment sites.

We delivered works at four different areas of Walsall: Bentley Road South, Bentley Mill Way, Darlaston Road-Pleck Road Junction and Bescot Road-Wallows Lane Junction. The scheme included a large amount of on-line widening including dualling, constructing additional slip roads, additional approach lanes, larger pedestrian reservations and roundabout widening. Other works included:

  • New carriageway construction
  • Junction improvements and new signalisation
  • Railway bridge connecting infrastructure and adjacent road construction
  • Improved pedestrian facilities including junctions and pathways
  • Lowering the carriageway under the Grade II Listed James Bridge Aqueduct to allow taller vehicles to travel beneath it. We also installed new traffic signals to alternate single flow traffic.
  • Construction of new roundabouts in lieu of junctions
  • Smoothing out the vertical level of Bentley Road South to increase driver safety
  • High quality public realm works
  • Installation of shared cycle/foot paths
  • Street lighting and furniture
  • Utilities installation and diversions
  • Extensive landscaping consisting of soft landscaping, ground profiling, seeding and provision of trees and shrubs
  • Over £1m of surfacing works
  • A new lighting scheme utilising LED lanterns

The project won a 2015 British Safety Council International Safety Award, and was awarded the 2016 CIHT West Midlands Award for Best Large Highway and Transportation Project.
