Swansea Quadrant Interchange - Groundworks is a 2010 Constructing Excellence Award Winner

Dawnus Construction is celebrating winning the Waste Minimisation Award at the 2010 Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards for our work on the S wansea Quadrant Interchange – Groundworks Project.

Milica Kitson , chief executive of CEW.   “The example shown by all of our Award winners, particularly the winner of our Waste Minimisation award, Swansea Quadrant Interchange - Groundworks, clearly demonstrate that a collaborative approach to procurement and project management not only guarantees great projects, but is the only way to achieve Government targets on waste and low/zero carbon.”

The award recognises our innovative material recycling and re-use strategies on the Swansea Quadrant Interchange Groundworks project.   By processing and reusing materials excavated on site and cleverly coordinating deliveries we were able to save over 700 lorry movements which minimised the carbon footprint of the site and also reduced traffic and disruption to Swansea City Centre motorists and pedestrians.   In total over 18,000 tonnes of excavated material was diverted from landfill and either re-used on this site or others.

“We are delighted to have won the Waste Minimisation Award,” Russell Evans, director of Dawnus Construction, said. “Waste and sustainability are important issues in the construction industry, and as a company we are committed to improving our performance. We are very pleased to have had our efforts recognised, and we plan to use our experience on the Swansea Quadrant Interchange to achieve similar results on future projects.”

Dawnus are committed to the Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP) initiative Construction Commitments: Halving Waste to Landfill agreement, which is intended to halve the amount of construction and demolition waste going to landfill by 2012. Dawnus is working to adopt and implement standards for good practice in reducing waste, recycling more, and increasing the use of recycled and recovered materials.

Eira Rowe, director operations and events at CEW said:   “These award winners are the best of the best and proof that the collaborative approach to the procurement and management of projects delivers outstanding performance and results every time.   It is a shining example for the rest of construction to follow at a time when we need to improve our procurement methods and measure performance more than ever.   Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to our sponsors and to everyone that attended such a great evening.”
