Skomer wins Sustainability Award
|
The Skomer Island building project saw off stiff competition to win the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Wales Sustainability Award in May 2008. The award recognises the achievement in enhancing this highly environmentally sensitive area, making it more visitor friendly whilst preserving the natural resources of the isle.
Dawnus acted as Principal Contractor on the project which included the development of new, Solar Energy powered, Warden’s accommodation, volunteer and visitor facilities and a new visitor information centre, hooked up to the island wildlife by CCTV. The timber framed Warden’s building also benefits from water harvesting and a new foul water treatment plant.
Particular attention was paid to completing the work without disturbing the Island’s wildlife, which includes Puffins, Manx Shearwaters and Seals.
This project will now compete against other world winners for the International Sustainability Award to be decided in October 2008.
