Wardens Facilities, Skomer Island
|
The aim of the Skomer Island Heritage Experience Project is to conserve and enhance the heritage of the island and improve the quality of the visitor experience through the provision of improved interpretation and accommodation facilities.
Improvements were made to Lockley Lodge and other facilities on the mainland which enhance the understanding of this special part of Pembrokeshire. The 150 year old farmhouse complex on the island was renovated to provide visitor, volunteer and staff accommodation.
The re-construction of a 25m x 8m ranger warden’s facility created a visitor management base and includes housing for the warden, the island’s reference library and archives, a laboratory and study rooms on Skomer Island, 2 miles off the South West coast of Wales.
All materials were shipped by barge & transported up the steep sided cove to the works area. Environmental issues were of paramount importance during construction so as not to disturb the wildlife, which includes Puffins, Manx Shearwaters and Seals.
