The project involves the design & construction of a 4,500m2 sales area with associated back of house and warehouse facilities. The main sales floor is raised over undercroft parking and is constructed on split levels with a 1,500m2 mezzanine. Access to both sales floors is through travellators.
Above the mezzanine level is a flat roof, which forms the floor slab for a four screen cinema.
The entire project is built on an existing gasworks site, where two buildings have had to be demolished and circa 4,500 tonnes of soil remediated. Screwsol displacement piles are being used to support the reinforced concrete undercroft, which prevent the creation of future contamination pathways through their unique shape.
An added complication for this challenging scheme is that the River Anton runs alongside the site and floods the existing car park at high flows. The project involves the re-modelling of the river channel to provide increased flood capacity through the creation of a wetland berm parallel to the main channel. |
