|
The funicular tram is operated by a cable situated in a slot within the highway and drawn by winches within the tram stations at the summit and halfway.
The works involved breaking out and replacing the existing tracks and foundations and replacing them to improve ride quality and safety.
Dawnus Construction was responsible for all the demolition work and reinstatement of the track bed and carriageway. The works were undertaken in three consecutive closed seasons from October through to March and was completed at the end of the 2004/2005 period.
Difficult access, including narrow streets and a very steep incline were overcome by the project team and with close liaison with local residents and the authorities disruption was kept to a minimum during the contract.
