Building Awards 2012 Finalist

We are delighted to announce that, for the second year running, Dawnus Construction has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Contractor of the Year (up to £300m) category for the Building Awards. We are extremely pleased and proud to be shortlisted as one of the top Contractors again, in spite of the tough trading conditions of the last year and the record number of entries submitted.

The prestigious Building Awards 2012 are going to be held on 18 April 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Over 1,300 people attended the Building Awards ceremony in 2011 to salute the best-in-class companies and projects from right across the Built Environment and Dawnus look forward to celebrating alongside the best in the industry again this year.

The awards are attended by senior-level directors, chief executives and partners from the delivery, consultancy and procurement areas and provide a chance to rub shoulders with and applaud the best in the industry.

Targeting BREEAM Outstanding and Exemplar Status at TATA Steelworks

Our exciting new projects at TATA Steelworks in Port Talbot have been targeted to achieve two sustainable development firsts for Dawnus. The £12.3m development consists of the concurrent design and construction of a stores building, training centre and industrial heritage/visitor centre being built on the live steelworks site. Both the stores building and visitor centre have achieved BREEAM Outstanding rating at the preconstruction stage with scores of 85.63 and 90.24, whilst the Training Centre has achieved BREEAM Excellent.
This is the first BREEAM Outstanding rating achieved for an industrial building in the UK.

The contract has also been registered with Constructing Excellence Wales as an Exemplar Project, the purpose of which is to deliver a project worthy of being copied by others in the industry. A case study will be produced on the project highlighting construction, social, economic and sustainability best practice. Ed Evans, CEW Director, Exemplar and Demonstration Programmes, said “I'm looking forward to supporting Dawnus, their partners and Tata Steel to deliver an Exemplar project which others can learn from, that keeps impacts on the local environment to a minimum and which maximises the value added to the local community and economy”.

Three Major Framework Successes

Following our acceptance onto the South East Wales Contractors (SEWSCAP) Framework at the start of 2011, we are delighted to have been informed that we have also been successful in our bid to join both strands of the South West Wales Regional Contractors Framework (SWWRCF).

Through our inclusion onto SWWRCF, we have been shortlisted to tender for up to £300 million pounds worth of work in South West Wales. We have got onto both tender lists, for Nealth Port Talbot and Swansea, and for Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire Councils respectively. Like SEWSCAP, both of these framework agreements last four years. Their scope is for the design and construction of schools and other public buildings, with project values ranging from £3.5 to £12 million.

All three Frameworks form part of Wales’ 21st Century Schools Programme, a joint plan drawn up by the assembly government and the Welsh Local Government Association, with the objective of developing better school learning environments, aiming to lead to better educational outcomes and a sustainable educational system in Wales.

Our admission onto these massive frameworks is a fantastic opportunity for Dawnus. We are delighted that we will have the opportunity to create modern, impressive schools and other publicly owned buildings in South Wales. We will also contribute to the social and environmental well-being of the wider community through our involvement.
BREEAM Award for MHA Headquarters

Dawnus Construction’s project to construct a new office headquarters building for Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA) has won an award for its sustainability and environmental performance.

MHA and Dawnus were presented the 2011 BREEAM Offices Award for Wales in a ceremony on July 14th , at the Holland House Hotel, Cardiff.

The BREEAM Awards Wales 2011 recognise and reward the highest scoring buildings in Wales under the BREEAM environmental standard. The winning buildings have all been independently assessed and certified, and represent some of the best examples of sustainable design and construction across Wales.

The £3m Nant Y Pia House project is located on Mahmilad Industrial Estate in Pontypool. The project involved the construction of a new building with approximately 1,750m² of naturally ventilated office space over three floor levels.

The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating upon completion, and included many environmentally friendly technologies. These included underfloor heating, rainwater harvesting, a leak detection system, solar thermal systems, photovoltaic panels which feed back into the national grid, infra red lighting control, and a natural ventilation system.

Sustainably sourced materials were used throughout the building and an ecologist was appointed at an early stage to promote the overall biodiversity value of the site.

Dawnus surpassed targets for reducing waste sent to landfill by reusing or recycling 97% of the waste produced on the project.

Dawnus has made a generous donation of £10,000 in support of the Llanelli Scarlet’s ‘Next Generation’ programme, which aims to develop promising young rugby players in the South West Wales Region.

The Genhedlaeth Nesaf (Next Generation) is a programme that is delivered by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). The programme will be run in 5 Centres of Development in the Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Carmarthen, Llanelli and Dinefwr areas. The WRU’s ‘Mini to Millennium’ skills curriculum will be delivered to young rugby players aged between 13 and 16 years old.

Under 14s will be identified through a series of festivals and follow a annual plan. Youths will play three games per centre, which will prepare these young players to play in the National Dewer Shield U’15’s Competition in the following season.

Dawnus is delighted to be part of the advancement of young talent in a region famous for its rugby prowess. WRU Regional Development Manager in the Scarlets area, Jeff Roach, commented “thank you on behalf of the WRU and the Scarlets for your support at Dawnus, which will provide such a positive contribution to the progression of young rugby players in the Scarlets’ Region.”
Wokingham Fire Station: The Last Brick

Dawnus’ project for the construction of the £1.3m Wokingham Fire Station is now in its final stages and is due for completion at the end of July. To celebrate this, Wokingham Councillors Angus Ross and Chris Bowring did some high altitude bricklaying to mark the completion of the brickwork at Wokingham’s new fire station.

The councillors were lifted on the aerial ladder platform from Whitley Wood, climbing out onto scaffolding to cement the last brick into place. They also buried a time capsule, containing photographs, information on Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, a breathing apparatus tally and a firefighter’s badged uniform shirt.
