Not only is today the start of a new school year, but also the start of a new chapter for the 240 pupils of Trimsaran Community Primary School, as they move into their new Passivhaus school building in Carmarthenshire. As the first building completed by Dawnus to Passivhaus standards, Trimsaran is also only the second school in Wales to achieve this leading energy performance standard.
Dawnus completed the design and construction of the new £6.4m, BREEAM Excellent, replacement primary school, delivered to BIM Level 2. Achieving full Passivhaus accreditation, it has been delivered to exceptional levels of air tightness, providing high levels of air quality for staff and pupils, costing up to 80% less to heat than an average school with the entire complex being run off a standard domestic boiler.
The existing school building has remained fully operational throughout construction and will now be demolished to make way for the new playing field and multi-function games court, as the final phase of the project commences. Due to their location next to the site, the pupils of Trimsaran have been fully engaged throughout, undertaking visits to the site to see the progress and completing an ICE bridge building event.
