One of our Civil Engineering Graduates, Tom, has been working with other Graduates and CITB funded Apprentices from Cyfle Bulding, South West Wales Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, to help build a new maternity unit in Kachumala, Uganda.

The project is funded by the charitable organisation Engineers for Overseas Development (EFOD). Uganda has a high infant mortality rate, where one hospital can serve a population greater than Wales.

Tom has provided technical and managerial expertise during his time in Uganda to support local labour, passing on his skills and knowledge, in the hope that the local people will continue to develop beyond the lifespan of the project. Tom has also shown commitment to the project, providing support from Wales, in terms of engineering calculations and assisting with programming and cost elements.

The project was recently reported by BBC Wales.
