Since 2012, Dawnus have carried out three major construction projects at the Skypark exemplar low carbon business park development, on land formerly occupied by Exeter Airport.
This project involved design and construction of a new, BREEAM Excellent rated, accommodation building for a postal distribution centre. The building is one of a number of ‘super depots’ intended to replace smaller regional centres, with an internal warehouse area of approximately 6,000m2, and 350m2 of office space over two floors.
The building comprises a steel frame superstructure with composite cladding roofing, on concrete pad foundations. The external elevations comprise a composite cladding system, curtain wall glazing, aluminium windows and steel fire doors, insulated cladding panels with dock levellers, shutter doors and canopies. The warehouse has a reinforced concrete ground floor slab, constructed to specification TR34/FM2 to accommodate loading vehicles. All shutter doors and dock loaders are electric, rather than manual.
The project also included the construction of external yards, a car park, new access roads and infrastructure, subject to a Section 278 agreement, with all associated drainage, street lighting and landscaping. We constructed approximately 1.1km of new access roads.
As part of the project Dawnus constructed landscaped areas including formation of an evaporation pond and construction of the Trim Trail around the site for use by the public, which included installation of exercise equipment for community use. The site contained several environmentally sensitive areas, and Dawnus worked closely with the Environment Agency to include biodiversity initiatives in the landscaping, including relocated badger setts.
