The project involved the construction of a new two-storey Entrance Block at The Bulmershe School.
The building comprises a lightweight structural steel frame with block work and insulated render to the external walls, and a metal deck trocal roof. The new building includes six new classrooms, a sixth form social area, 400-seat hall, new reception with security doors, staff offices, including headteacher and deputies’ offices, and a hall viewing room on first floor for lighting/sound management. External works included construction of a new car park, and hard and soft landscaping.
The building includes several sustainable features including solar PV cells on the roof, and a central roof light with glazed sides on the first floor to maximise natural lighting. The building BMS also incorporates the SyxthSense system to monitor building performance and can output data to a central monitoring system. We also implemented several initiatives to reuse and recycle materials and reduce waste sent to landfill.
We partnered with Wokingham Council and the CITB to support them in becoming a Construction Skills Academy, and provided numerous employment and skills opportunities in the Wokingham area.
Additional works were awarded during the contract to refurbish the existing hall/dining hall area. Access to the hall was restricted due to a sunken garden that was several metres below the level of the rest of the school. We filled in the garden area to bring it to the same level as the rest of the school, and refurbished the hall building, including raising the floor, making the building fully DDA compliant.
