The project involved the design and construction of the new, Gurnos House Care Home in Merthyr Tydfil.
The Extracare facility allows residents a degree of independence whilst also providing 24-hour care and communal social facilities. Community areas have been incorporated to replace the former Gurnos Sunday School building and the former Gurnos Senior Citizens Club building.
Structural composition of the 2530m², permanent, new build is brick and blockwork with block and beam roofing. Floor to ceiling double glazing in some areas allows natural light to flood the home, whilst preserving heat.
A majority of the user space is located on the ground floor, providing 32 en-suite residential rooms across East and West wings, with a small lower ground floor area for plant and staff facilities. Further provisions include a welcoming glazed lobby with reception, office areas, communal areas, wheelchair store and all required operational facilities. Externally we also constructed staff and visitor parking.
The scheme was designed and built to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating, with key sustainable features including the use of natural light to reduce electricity usage, and sustainable drainage.
