This design and build project involved the construction of a new primary care centre with a surgery, pharmacy and two-storey dental surgery. The scheme comprised a four-storey steel frame structure with brickwork and rain screen cladding, curtain walling and single ply membrane roof. Car parking was accommodated in a sheet piled basement accessed by car lift.
The project was designed and built to achieve BREEAM Very Good. The building features environmentally friendly technologies in the form of photovoltaic cells and air source heat pumps which provided 20% of the buildings energy. There is also a biomass boiler which provides 20% of the buildings energy. We diverted over 85% of waste from landfill, and 90% of labour, suppliers and subcontractors were from the local area.
This new build was situated in a relatively constrained working area closely surrounded by residents, businesses and a main road. Liaison with the local stakeholders began prior to the construction works starting, with letters sent to adjacent neighbours, and was maintained throughout the contract with regular newsletters. Due to the close proximity of adjacent businesses and residential properties there was also regular verbal contact with all close neighbours.
We also had a local Council representative involved to assist with the liaison and involvement of the neighbours. We worked with the Council on numerous community initiatives such as helping to improve a local car park and assisting with filling in potholes in the road.
A good impression of the site was kept maintained with decorated hoarding at front and side and the perimeter checked daily and cleaned every night.
