This contract involved the design and construction of a BREEAM Very Good rated 16-bed Respite Care Facility for Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council. The site was located in a disused public car park on the Aberavon sea front, with residential care homes and social housing opposite and public footpaths to the front and rear.
Before work on the foundations could commence, the ground had to be reduced, with topsoil/sand and vegetation being stockpiled on site and griddled for later use as landscaping material. The single-storey reinforced concrete structure rests on a raft slab foundation; concrete walls were cast in-situ and keyed into the raft slab with steel starter bars. Typically, 200mm thick Rockwool insulation has been applied, with a rendered finish to the exterior.
The Care Facility consists of four clusters of four bedrooms with level access shower en-suites. Provision of Arjo hoist systems, covering the bedroom and en-suite area, has been made in many rooms to lift disabled individuals and assist staff with care duties. Each cluster has its own sensory courtyard, sensory room, staff bedrooms and lounge with kitchen area. A security key system controls authorised access in and around the building.
The new building also provides a communal dining room and commercial kitchen area, assisted bathrooms, staff and reception area, offices and other ancillary areas.
External works involved associated access roads, car parking areas, paving and a landscaped garden and courtyard. Connections to statutory providers for foul drains, incoming electric, gas, water and telecoms were also provided, and a public car parking area for beach access was created to replace the existing one.
