Project Overview

This project involved the design and construction of a new two-storey medical centre with consulting areas and treatment rooms. The Primary Care Centre has an overall area of 2635m2 and includes consulting rooms, a minor operation facility, a pharmacy, a dental surgery, a training facility, a mobile MRI scanner facility, an X-ray facility and associated staff administration and rest facilities.

The project also includes provision of a car park with ambulance bay, and bicycle parking facilities. Showering/drying facilities for staff are also included.

The design of the new medical centre was influenced by the surrounding school and residential properties. We used a range of materials which reflected and complimented these buildings, and the centre incorporates a green roof.

The building was also designed to be fully inclusive. There are disabled toilet facilities for patients and staff in all parts of the building, level access into the building at all entry and egress points; lift access to all floors, and all internal doors wide enough to provide generous clearance for wheelchair users.

As the building contains numerous different facilities, it was essential that the project meets the various NHS standards, and Dawnus worked closely with the architects to ensure that the design meets these requirements. This was particularly important in the X-ray facility, where it was essential that the correct level of shielding was implemented, and on the minor operation facility, where anti-infection control is necessary.

Dawnus also had to monitor acoustic values in the building to ensure that it is not possible to overhear confidential information from outside consultation rooms.
