This project involved refurbishment and new build extension works to an existing 2,500m² four-storey theatre in Cardiff city centre. The extremely confined location adjoined the fully operational Cardiff University Students Union building and was further constrained by the University Mathematics building on its other side, a busy road in front and railway line to the rear.
Following extensive internal structures and external façade demolition plus a full mechanical and electrical strip-out, we carried out the reconfiguration and refurbishment of front of house, installing new seating areas in both auditoria with provision for 460 and 200 persons. Further redevelopment of the foyer area included a new box office, café bar, restaurant, toilets and exhibition areas. Backstage works included refurbished control rooms, new wardrobe areas and a new green room. The extension work involved construction of a structural steel frame built on the existing staff car park to house the new rehearsal room.
During delivery of this project the programme altered significantly as surveys identified stabilisation issues. Dawnus mitigated delays and maintained progress by re-programming activities, progressing follow-on fit-out activities in parallel with demolition and strengthening works. Extensive collaborative planning was carried out with our mechanical and electrical contractors and other specialist fit-out contractors and as a result the works were completed on time, meeting the re-opening date of the theatre.
