Tell us about your role, the project you are supporting and the type of work you undertake on a daily basis
I am currently assisting the Project Quantity Surveyor on the New Welsh Medium School project in Ystalyfera, being built for Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.
My main responsibility is the procurement and subcontract element of the project. My duties range from measurement and quantification, preparation and issuing of tender documents to subcontractors and general management of the subcontractor accounts on site. This includes carrying out re-measures after completion of the works on site, and ensuring the timely payment of subcontractors in line with their subcontract order. As well as the above I also assist the project quantity surveyor with various client duties when required.

Dawnus are a very driven, talented and dedicated company. Life within Dawnus is very happy and friendly, everybody works well alongside one another, and everybody is very supportive.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I personally enjoy the complex nature of the job, with ever-changing construction details to learn, as well as seeing the evolution of a construction project right from design stage to project completion. I also enjoy the varying types of projects that I have been involved in, ranging from onshore wind farm submissions, vehicular maintenance depots and new build secondary schools.
What training and development opportunities have Dawnus offered you?
Dawnus have offered me in-house training opportunities such as courses on Excel and various external courses such as the CECA Bezzant NEC courses in Bristol and the Driver Trett seminars in Swansea. As well as this, Dawnus have offered me the opportunity to enrol in University and complete a degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management which will further benefit my development.
What has been your highlight so far?
My personal highlight with Dawnus to date is having the opportunity to become the lead Quantity Surveyor on a project in Haverfordwest working with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water to build a Vehicle Maintenance Depot for their vehicles. This gave me a massive insight into the extent of the Quantity Surveying role as a whole, as well as how to personally involve and conduct myself in dealing with client commercial matters, from which I gained valuable experience.
What are your future aspirations?
My future aspirations initially would be to achieve a first class honours degree and to possibly go on and achieve a postgraduate degree. As well as this, I will be looking to achieve the MRICS professional membership and to gradually move myself up the career ladder towards management.
