Region: North Wales
Role: Trainee Quantity Surveyor
Tell us about your role, the project you are supporting and the type of work you undertake on a daily basis
As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor I have been assisting one of our Senior Quantity Surveyors on an Anaerobic Digestion Plant project. Some of the work I have been undertaking includes; tracking site costs weekly, pricing additional works, obtaining quotations from subcontractors and presenting these to the project manager in a cost comparison format for him to decide who to use, preparing and assisting with valuations, preparing subcontract orders and re-measuring works on drawings and on site.
On a smaller project, along with the above I have also been preparing cost forecasts, notifying the client of early warnings and pricing compensation events while liaising with the client.
What attracted you to Dawnus and why did you apply?
I was aware of some local projects that Dawnus had carried out and after further research I learnt that Dawnus was not only expanding in Wales and England but also in Africa, which intrigued me. I also learnt that the company would provide me with good training and prospects for the future. I had previously attended full time college and when I decided that wasn’t the right path for me I started looking for apprenticeships, which was definitely the best route for me! I would highly recommend an apprenticeship, not only do you gain a qualification but in-valuable on-the-job skills and knowledge, while earning!
What training and development opportunities have Dawnus offered you?
As part of the apprenticeship I was required to complete an NVQ Level 3 in Surveying and a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment (which was on a day release to college). When I completed the NVQ Level 3 Dawnus offered me to try the NVQ Level 6, which I have gone onto complete, and when I completed my BTEC Level 3 Dawnus agreed to fund my HNC in Construction as part of my promotion to a Trainee Quantity Surveyor. I have also recently been on an NEC training course which was extremely useful. I have also been given more opportunities to develop by having more responsibility on smaller projects!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy learning about the contractual side of construction as I find this extremely interesting, but I do also really enjoy working with figures and money every day. I also enjoy that every day is different and that I’m constantly learning on the job!
What has been your highlight so far with Dawnus?
My highlight would definitely be having my own small project, I feel as though it was a massive achievement for me considering as I’ve only been in the construction industry for just short of two years! My other highlight would be getting a promotion from Apprentice to Trainee and Dawnus informing me that they would fund my HNC study!
How would you describe the life and culture in Dawnus?
I would say that the culture within the company is extremely good! I can happily go to my line manager or other management if I need support or if I have any queries and they will always ensure they take the time to explain or help me in a way that I understand! Everyone is always willing to help others if they have better knowledge or experience in certain areas than others which is extremely helpful.
What are your future aspirations?
I hope to complete my HNC and progress onto a Quantity Surveying Degree at Liverpool John Moores University, I would then like to do a Masters before hopefully becoming chartered with RICS and I hope to one day become a Managing Quantity Surveyor.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying to Dawnus?
I would highly recommend applying to Dawnus, I cannot fault the company, applying for the apprenticeship was the best choice I have ever made and I am extremely happy that Dawnus are giving me the opportunity to grow and progress within the company.
