Joined Dawnus: October 2010
Degree: MSc Civil Engineering
Current Role: Section Engineer
Can you briefly summarise your career history with Dawnus to date?
I started with Dawnus as a Graduate Engineer in October 2010. Over the past 6 years I have worked on a variety of projects including: Building (Retail, Healthcare and Residential), and Civils: Water Treatment Works, Wind Farms, Infrastructure and Bridges.
What attracted you to Dawnus?
Dawnus is a relatively young company with ambition to grow. It has a strong local presence in South Wales as well as potential overseas opportunities. I also liked that there was a relatively small graduate intake – there are not hundreds of new starters on the same level so it’s easier to stand out from the crowd.
Tell us about your role, the project you are supporting and the type of work you undertake on a daily basis
I am currently a Section Engineer working on Dawnus’ Eastern Bay Link project in Cardiff Bay. This is a £36 million project funded by the Welsh Government and involves building a 1km bridge over Cardiff Docks to alleviate traffic in the city centre. As Section Engineer I have a number of site engineers who I ensure have the knowledge, information and equipment required to set out on site on a daily basis. I am responsible for identifying and ordering all plant and materials required for sections of work, as well as establishing and supervising safe systems of work that minimise risk to the people involved in specific operations on site. I also ensure accurate records are kept of my sections so that the commercial team have all information they need. At times I am required to produce programmes of work for sections against which progress will be monitored, and to allocate resources to forecast costs.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What has been your highlight so far?
I enjoy the completion of each project, particularly those which are significantly challenging or complex. The completion of the SA1 Medical Centre was a highlight for me, as well as my involvement in the Eastern Bay Link scheme.
What training and development opportunities have Dawnus offered you?
I have always been provided with any training required; this includes:
What are your future aspirations?
To manage my own site and deliver the project within deadline and budget, ideally working on the tender for the project beforehand and seeing it from conception through to delivery.
