Between 2009 and 2015 Dawnus delivered over £15m of civils and infrastructure works at The Works former steelworks regeneration site in Ebbw Vale.
This was our first project delivered at the site, and involved three main elements of development in the northern end of the steelworks site:
- Diversion of existing surface water culverts across the site so that pipework was moved outside of developable plot areas. The works included laying of approximately 800m of new culvert, up to 1200mm in diameter, in trenches up to 5.5m deep. Remnants of the original concrete basement structures from the steelworks were encountered during trench excavation and were broken out.
- Provision of drainage to the northern development plots. The works included extension of the above-mentioned surface water system as well as installation of some 500m of foul sewer and approximately 260m of diverted combined sewer overflow.
- Demolition of existing structures, some of which included asbestos, tree felling, breakout of concrete ground slabs and cellars, excavation and disposal of contaminated material and approximately 40,000m3 of filling to raise the ground levels. Fill was sourced from various locations within the steelworks site boundary as well as imported. Junction improvement works were also carried out.
On all projects at The Works we worked closely with the Council to maximise social and community benefits, including employment and training opportunities for local people, and opportunities for the local supply chain.
