Project Overview

This is an infrastructure project preparatory to a commercial development by Sainsbury's at Talbot Green near Llantrisant in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The scope of work included works to Glamorgan Vale roundabout on the A473, with a new access road and internal roundabout, separate access off the A473 to a service yard, gas main diversions, construction of a flood bund, and plateau work and ground improvements for the new Sainsbury's store. The site is partly a brownfield development, therefore remediation was carried out at the outset of the project.

Value engineering we proposed on the scheme included the use of elliptical pipes instead of box culverts, providing a significant saving, and the use of 6B stone 'starter layer' with triaxial geogrid for ground stabilisation works.

We worked with Natural Resources Wales to co-ordinate our dewatering operations, including the construction of settlement ponds to avoid silting the adjacent river. The site is adjacent to the Pant Marsh ecological area; we prepared a Biodiversity Plan for the scheme as part of our Site Environmental Management Plan, with supervision from White Young Green throughout to ensure the area was not affected.

We liaised with a nearby school, and programmed our works to avoid excessive vibration during school hours. We also arranged for excess topsoil to be provided for Pontyclun Rugby Club.
