We were lead Joint Venture partner (with Ferrovial Agroman) on this major scheme in Cardiff. The project involved design and construction of approximately 1km of new dual carriageway and 3.5m wide combined cycle/footway, and improvements to two roundabouts.
The link road connects Queensgate and Ocean Way roundabouts passing through Cardiff Docks; to accommodate these two existing roads, both approximately 750m long, have been diverted and/or reconstructed. Significant utility diversions have been undertaken.
The conceptual design comprised new embankments either side of a 250m long viaduct passing over two side roads and the Celsa railway, which operates 24/7 and forms an essential link between Celsa’s Castle Works and Rolling Mill.
The design stage commenced in January 2015. Enabling Works overlapped with the design phase to maintain the overall project programme. During this period we completed all service diversions and constructed the Roath Dock Access and Celsa Roads, thus allowing main construction works to commence in March 2016.
The scheme was awarded the 2017 British Safety Council International Award, the 2017 NEC Contractor of the Year Award and was Highly Commended in the Project of the Year Category.
