Design and construction of a new hydroelectric scheme at the Radyr Weir on the River Taff in Cardiff. The works involved installation of two 200kW Archimedes screw turbines within the river bank area, behind the eastern abutment of Radyr Weir.
Works also included construction of an inlet channel, beginning just upstream of the weir, diverting water to the Archimedian screw assembly. Works for this hydroelectric development included:
Awarded from an early design stage, we were responsible for appointing a design team consisting of a technology consultant, civil designer, M&E designer and turnkey equipment provider.
During the pre-construction period we carried out Site Investigation works to inform the temporary and permanent works design, carried out river level and flow monitoring to rationalise process equipment layout, developed the design to integrate process equipment and civil works using a fully coordinated BIM model, refined the programme and updated the scheme cost through implementation of Compensation Events.
In June 2017 the scheme was awarded the ICE Wales Cymru George Gibby Award.
